Rubies & Sapphires

We have access to many loose sapphire & rubies ranging from the deepest blue to the softest pretty pinks to golden oranges in sapphire & deep red to pinky red in rubies.

For that engagement ring that is a little bit different or special anniversaries, or just because you love colour, sapphire & rubies are a great choice to add to your jewellery collection.

Ruby

Ruby is the birthstone for July and the gem for 40th Wedding Anniversaries.

Desired throughout history, it is available in deep to lighter vibrant red, its hardness is 9. Fine quality ruby is becoming increasingly rare especially in gems over 1ct. Due to the shape of the crystal it is usually cut into oval and cushion shapes, so large rounds, squares and emerald cuts are scarce. Bright clean gems are desirable, but dull included material is unattractive.

Country of origin does not guarantee fine quality as all areas produce various qualities. Currently it is mined in Mozambique, Burma, Madagascar, and very limited quantities in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand and Vietnam.

Sapphire

Sapphire is the birthstone for September, a durable, hard gem. Sapphire is a wonderful stone for all types of jewellery including engagement rings due to its wide range of colours.

Sapphire is a variety of corundum which in its purest form is colourless (white Sapphire). Traces of colouring elements produce the amazing array of Sapphire colours. Most of the Sapphire mined is of poor and industrial quality and only a small percentage is cut and polished into beautiful gems.
